Affiliations

Our President is appointed to the Department of Health and Family Service's State Advisory Board, and acts as a liaison between our group and the state.  We are represented by the Wisconsin Homecare Organization and we encourage membership in the Wisconsin Nurses Association.

Participation in these groups allows us to update members on issues that affect them and their patients, and to have a voice in these issues.  It also provides an avenue through which we can develop professional relationships that reflect positively on independent providers.

We maintain that it is in the best interest of all independent providers to work together, pooling our knowledge and experience to meet common goals.  While the members of the board assume primary responsibility for the operation of the organization, membership participation is encouraged and integral to its success.

HIPAA Information

On April 15, 2003, the HIPAA Privacy Rules went into effect.  Independent nurses are required to comply with these rules if they are a covered entity.  Any independent nurse that hires a billing service to transmit claims electronically or transmits their own claims electronically is a covered entity.  If a nurse uses a secure portal to transmit claims, to transmit Prior Authorization forms, or to transmit Protected Health Information of any kind, that nurse is considered a covered entity.  On April 20, 2005, the HIPAA Security Rules went into effect.  If you use your computer for anything related to your Independent Nursing Practice, you are required to comply with these rules.  If you have a Forwardhealth Portal, you must be HIPAA compliant.

PHP has had several in-services and provided members with forms to help them comply.  We have created a HIPAA Privacy and Security Manual for Independent Nurses.  If you are new to independent nursing, this is a good way to learn how to become HIPAA compliant.  This manual also includes forms that you will need.

Print and complete this order form to get the HIPAA Privacy and Security Manual.
